"Examination and Cross-Examination of Experts
in Forensic Psychophysiology Using the Polygraph"

Book Reviews

A book review by Dr. Gordon H. Barland published in Polygraph, Journal of the American Polygraph Association, Volume 31, Number 1, 2002, is quoted in part as follows:

"This is a well-organized textbook for examiners and defense attorneys seeking to get the polygraph admitted as evidence. Prosecuting attorneys will also find it of interest, particularly in terms of what to expect during a foundation hearing on this topic,"

"The book consists of 12 chapters covering virtually all areas needed in a Daubert hearing. After an introductory chapter, the author reviews the three key legal cases bearing on polygraph admissibility (Frye, Daubert, and Scheffer). Matte briefly discusses various test formats, then focuses on preparing for the introduction of polygraph evidence."

"The organization of the book is inspired. Dr. Matte has considerable experience in testifying, and this is superbly illustrated in his recommendations for presenting a foundation. He details a list of exhibits the expert should submit in support of the testimony. These are very helpful and go a long way toward providing an adequate record for appellate review."

"If Matte's book were to do nothing else, the inclusion of the exhibits alone is enough to recommend this book for everybody interested in the admissibility of the polygraph." "Consistent with Matte's passion for documenting his sources, the book is meticulously footnoted with references. It is authoritative."

"I heartily recommend this book for every thinking examiner, and for attorneys on both sides of the dispute over admissibility of the polygraph. It is expensive, but it's worth the money."

A two-column book review by Dick Wheelan, former police detective in White Plains, New York and current criminal defense attorney in Houston, Texas, published in The Champion, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Vol. XXV, No. 10, December 2001, is quoted in part as follows:

"Many defense attorneys, myself included, view the polygraph with more than a little skepticism. Of course, buried deep in the subconscious regions of our defense-attorney minds is the not-so-subtle realization that a 100 percent effective polygraph would render our profession obsolete. And if the test is not 100 percent accurate, then what good is it? So, it was with some trepidation that I undertook the reading of Dr. Matte' tome. My fears were not completely unfounded, but for the most part, the book has made me a convert"

"This text is intended to convince readers of the efficacy of the polygraph, but as its title implies, it is intended to assist the attorney to examine and cross-examine the polygraph expert. The book achieves its goal. In fact, the attorney who takes the time to study and understand this text might well know more about the use of the polygraph than the expert he is questioning. The book is nothing if not comprehensive. It covers Frye and Daubert standards of admissibility, it discusses the cases in which polygraph evidence was admitted, and it explains several of the major approaches (numerical and clinical) to what the author calls psychophysiology veracity examination techniques."

"Dr. Matte goes through an excruciatingly detailed discourse of the physiological aspects of the polygraph, which is necessary to understand how the polygraph works; sample diagrams of all the various tracing segments - the squiggly lines recorded by the machine - as well as indication of how they are interpreted follow this."

"But the best is yet to come. As the title suggest, the book contains chapters on how to lay an evidentiary foundation for testimony by a polygraph expert as well as on how to cross-examine the expert. These chapters contain actual transcripts of direct and cross-examination and constitute, perhaps, the most valuable segment of the book."

An online review by Charles J. Scibetta, Esq. entitled "The Essential Litigation Handbook for Polygraph Evidence" appearing on Amazon.com is quoted as follows:

"As an attorney with a longtime interest in polygraph, I was thrilled to find Dr. Matte's recent contribution to this field. As Mr. Kitchen notes in his foreword to Dr. Matte's masterful treatise, the primary obstacle to the wide spread use of polygraph evidence in litigation is the difficulty of laying a proper foundation for its admission. To the average attorney the intricacies of psychophysiological veracity (PV) examinations present a virtual minefield of obstacles to the effective presentation of a foundation for admitting polygraph evidence or the cross-examination of an opposing expert. In "Examination and Cross-Examination of Experts in Forensic Psychophysiology Using the Polygraph", Dr. Matte has given us a detailed map to enable even the most unschooled practitioner to confidently navigate a safe passage."

An online review by John Galianos appearing on Amazon.com is quoted as follows:

"I have been involved in polygraphy since 1976. I have attended many annual seminars from different Polygraph Associations. I have testified in many criminal and civil cases involving polygraphy. Never have I read such a useful book to prepare me for the most robust of cross-examinations from the best attorneys. If you are a dedicated polygraph examiner, take the profession seriously and do not want to get caught off-guard,this book is a MUST. Take my word, this volume will supply you with the correct answers to give attorneys and judges which will enhance your professionnalism on the stand. I highly recommend it. Great for attorneys involved in polygraph cases. This book is a jewel."
